Flavored Coffee: How It's Made and Which to Choose

How Is Flavored Coffee Made?

Coffee is a product highly sensitive to aromas. There are several ways to flavor coffee, and each method produces a different result in intensity and aroma. Here we explain the most common ones.

Coffee Flavoring Methods

During storage
When coffee is stored alongside spices or herbs, it will, given enough time, pick up some of the aroma in the container. However, some of that intensity is lost during brewing.

During grinding
The spice or herb is added to the beans during grinding. This integrates it more thoroughly with the bean and gives a better result — it's the method we use at Casa Eguía for our flavored range.

During brewing or serving
A third method involves adding the flavoring during brewing, or adding it to the coffee once it's made, right before serving. These are good options, but they mean having whatever herb or spice you want on hand, and of course straining out any leaf or twig you don't want floating in your coffee.

Additionally, if you drink coffee with milk, another option is to flavor the milk instead, or to flavor the sugar you use.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does flavored coffee contain sugar or sweeteners?
Not necessarily. Our flavored coffees are made by adding natural aromas during grinding, with no added sugars needed — the sweetness you notice comes from the aroma itself.

Can I order several flavors to try before deciding?
Yes, our Flavored Coffee Tasting Pack includes 6 different flavors in a single pack, ideal for discovering your favorite.

Does flavored coffee have less caffeine than regular coffee?
No, unless you specifically choose one of our decaf versions. The flavoring doesn't affect the bean's caffeine content.
